The Tremendous Difference Eva Moskowitz Has Made In The Lives Of New York Children

Eva Moskowitz is responsible for New York’s largest network of charter schools and she accomplished it in less than ten years. Success Academies take care of 11,000 kids and the results they produce are astounding. Even though so many of the students come from families who are struggling they are hitting some of the highest scores in the state.

Eva Moskowitz received her education in Harlem public schools and eventually completed her Ph.D. She stands for high standards and accountability. She was so discouraged by the status quo she founded her first charter school in 2006 with philanthropic funds.

Eva Moskowitz began her mission by running for city council because she wanted to spotlight education. After she was elected she was the chair for the educational committee. She conducted approximately 125 hearings daily in a n effort to fix the system. She feels the contracts designed for teachers in New York City do not have the interests of the teachers or the children’s education in mind.

The efforts of Eva Moskowitz involved giving children a great education and did not originally concern schools for low income children. When her first school in Harlem started there were 165 kids. She concentrated on teaching math, writing, science and reading. She encouraged self reflection and good moral character. Chess is used to teach strategy and is considered an academic subject.

Eva Moskowitz was the mother of three kids at the time the first school opened. This helped her figure out what type of environment would work best and made her think about recess. She understood kids need to be able to run around and more than once each day. Her school’s fight against boredom and keep the students learning and engaged.

There were numerous difficulties to be overcome before the charter schools became successful. The earliest days were plagued by bugs, rodents and water main breaks. When the principal quit Eva Moskowitz took control of the position. She focused on constantly improving and met with her faculty every single day. They made lists and then they made plans. Eva Moskowitz succeeded and Success Academies has made a tremendous difference in the lives of the kids.
